What is Imposter Syndrome + How to Overcome it for Good

That pesky little voice of self-doubt has you worrying about your capabilities and if you’re using your full potential to be a successful business owner. You are your own worst enemy sometimes and you need to find a way to move past this.

Aren’t you tired of battling this alone?

Come on. You know what I mean…

The constant up and down that comes along with venturing out on your own as an independent entrepreneur can be a terrible rollercoaster of emotions.

One day you feel most confident, at the top of the world, and ready to tackle a brand new day. You know your strategies and coaching methods inside and out. You’ve got this in the bag and you’re ready to chase those bags to the bank.

Oh, but how the tables turn...

Just when you think you’ve got your business plan laid out, you’ve successfully snagged a loyal client or two, and spend what little free time you have studying new strategies—  here you go again!

You start to pummel your confidence with self-doubt and fearful thoughts that just won’t leave you alone.

Someone’s going to call you out.

Someone’s going to figure out you’re just a phony.

You don’t know enough to teach others.

You’re going to mess this up!

You can’t run a business—  who do you think you are?

Every bad scenario you make up in your head makes you want to crawl back into the comfort of your introverted hideaway, deadbolt the lock, and give up.

Is this ringing any bells?

It sounds like you’ve got a bad case of that rotten ol’ imposter syndrome. Though you may think this is something that only happens to you specifically, it’s quite a common occurrence that can happen to anyone.

What is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is your brain trying to use triggering scare tactics to trickle away your confidence when your mindset is not in tip-top shape. Imposter syndrome will hinder your business goals and your own well-being if you allow it.

Even if you have a great result-oriented list of accomplishments in your business, this doesn’t mean imposter syndrome won’t affect you. Whether you’re a newbie or a veteran entrepreneur, imposter syndrome can sneak up on you and prevent you from furthering your career.

With imposter syndrome, there’s a strong psychological pull that makes you want to give in to your fears because the voice inside of your head is screaming that you’re nothing but a fraud. That same voice whispers your doubts and if you’re not careful, you’ll start to believe it.

How to Stop Procrastination and Perfectionism Stalling

What are you working on right now? Are you struggling to find answers as to why you still haven’t checked off every little thing planned in your schedule?

Your plans seemed so simple when you mapped out your weekly assignments and client calls. Now you feel like you’re drowning in work and on top of all of that, you also have to remember to keep up with business expenses, updating your social media presence, and responding to emails. It’s truly draining and so, you start to nit-pick little details.

While you sit with your negative thoughts,  procrastinating your obligations, you find the little voice of doubt pointing out every error or flaw about your work. You need everything to be perfect, concise, compelling, and still have your own personal style to add, too.

This need for perfection is just another way imposter syndrome affects you. Imposter syndrome makes you double-check everything you put to task. You can spend countless hours wasting your time trying to be perfect—  it isn’t going to happen!

The real reason you’re so focused on doing or redoing your work to perfection is causing you to procrastinate. This procrastination is due to, yes you guessed it, imposter syndrome.

The only way to break free from imposter syndrome’s strangeling hold is to work on your mindset. Channeling the reasons why you’re allowing your fears and doubts to ruin your plans will help you stop procrastinating because of perfectionism stalling.

Overcoming imposter syndrome doesn’t happen in a day or by listening to an hour-long inspiring lecture. Sure, these things can help, but it’s up to you to strengthen your mindset to get rid of imposter syndrome.

Change Your Mindset with Realistic Goals

The only one with the power to change your mind is you. You have to deeply believe that you hold all the power and use it to your advantage.

Sure, you’ve scoffed at books that claim to alter your brain and programs that swear to change your life. That’s because you’ve never given it a try before! Let’s break down a simple daily routine for you to break out of the habit of falling victim to imposter syndrome.

The goal is to set concentration in your mind to help propel you forward with firm decision making to accomplish your own goals, one day at a time.

First, make a list of every goal you want to achieve within six months to a year’s time. You want to make these goals as realistic as possible. If this timeline is too wide-ranged for you to grasp at the moment—  start smaller. Even capping your goal time to what you want to achieve within the next month or week will do. Just be sure you’re keeping your goals as specific and realistic as possible.

Once you have your list of goals written down with specific deadlines for each goal, keep the end game in mind. Continue to cross completed goals off of your list and add new ones. This process is great to add to your mindset routine because it gives you focus and reminds you about everything you’ve accomplished so far. Be sure to add how you plan on reaching your goals!

An example of writing your goal could be: “I will gain one new client this month by continuing to market my services through my email list.”

Keeping a journal of positive affirmations is another practice to instill a positive mindset to combat imposter syndrome. This means writing and verbally repeating affirmations that resonate with your business and personal goals. You can log these bold, detailed statements into a journal or record your own voice to listen whenever imposter syndrome threatens to bring you down.

For example, you could write: “I am a successful entrepreneur. I will continue to enrich the lives of others by using the techniques I have worked hard to perfect.”

Be Confident, Resilient, & Breathe Positivity

Oftentimes it’s the challenges held within your own subconscious that arise and wreak havoc once imposter syndrome has settled into your thoughts. By keeping a healthy mindset, you will be able to beat imposter syndrome as long as you stick with the practice.

Repeating your goals and affirmations will help guide your mindset back into a positive attitude. These little steps are more than just jotting down your thoughts, hopes, and wishes. Working on your mindset to overcome imposter syndrome will take time and great effort on your part.

Don’t let this scare you away! You will reap the benefits of practicing positivity when you repeatedly confirm your beliefs and congratulate yourself on your accomplishments.

Imposter syndrome can be a scary, crippling mind-game, but you are stronger than your irrational fears. Don’t let imposter syndrome hold you back or stop your ambition.

You will overcome imposter syndrome—  and it’ll be your greatest pride to feel that relief.

Cheaper, Healthier Alternatives

The world can seem like a huge, scary, germ-infested place when it comes to the worries of a mom that wants what’s best for her children. Finding cheaper, healthier alternatives becomes a never-ending cycle of trial and error. Advice becomes outdated. Products get recalled. It’s a great relief to discover ways to make due with cheaper and/or healthier alternatives for:

  • foods

  • products

  • lifestyle changes

Be Inclusive

Oftentimes the advice moms find online pertains to examples with one child. Keep in mind that moms of multiples need advice, hacks, and fun times, too!

Are you a mom? Perfect. Then, you know how difficult it is to brainstorm fun, new ideas for your little one to stay excited, entertained, and engaged. Write about what you know from personal experience or interview some of your mom friends to get a broader point of view and more examples.

Social Distancing Examples

It’s summer 2021 and after the difficulty of keeping kids inside or as securely socially distant as possible since last summer, moms are actively looking for safe ways to entertain their kids. While some had the opportunity to homeschool this past year, it’s no secret moms are aching to get out this summer and do something new and fun with the kids. Offer a list of clean, safe places for moms to get out of the house and expand their socializing skills, especially for their younger children who have not had any time to socialize as part of their school experience and development.

Products get updated as women become more conscious of what we use on our skin and hair. Today’s latest trend is keeping clean beauty as a top priority!

It’s easy to get looped into all the latest skincare lines and makeup brands with constant ads telling us to keep up and buy more. Putting all new products to the test on your body can have damaging effects, depending on your individual skin or hair type. Not all of us can use the same shampoos, lotions or facewash. We all have different reactions-- good or bad. Just because an expensive makeup works for your best friend, doesn’t mean it will necessarily work for you.

Egg Hair Mask: Revitalize Your Hair

Purpose: Replenish dry, damaged hair and protect.

  1. Crack eggs and separate yolk. You only need to use the yolk for this hair mask. Use 2-3 large eggs depending on your hair length and thickness.

  2. Let the mask sit on your hair for about 30 minutes. You can use this time to do some household chores or relax while trying out a homemade face mask, like the ones listed below.

  3. Time to rinse! Wash your hair with cold water. Make sure you get all the egg yolk washed out to prevent it from settling and becoming sticky.

Get Shiny, Smooth Hair With A Mayonnaise Hair Mask

Purpose: Add shine to dull hair.

  1. Grab that container of mayonnaise and go to town! Cover the entirety of your locks.

  2. Let the mayonnaise sit for 30 minutes. You may want to cover your hair with a cap to prevent dripping.

  3. Rinse your hair with cold water, much like the previous mask, you’ll want to be sure to wash out all of the mayo to prevent odor.

Repair Dry Hair Using Coconut Oil

Purpose: Add shine, Repair breakage, Prevent dandruff.

  1. Scoop a gallop of coconut oil, about the size of your palm. Let the oil melt in your hand and you’ll see that it’s more than enough! Let the oil drain into a bowl to stop the slippery mess. Run your fingers thoroughly through your hair with the coconut oil, from root to tip.

  2. This mask can also be kept for 30 minutes, or you can wear a hair cap to sleep and let the coconut oil work overnight.

  3. Rinse, rinse, rinse! Remember to use cold water while washing your hair. This is the toughest mask to wash off, but the shine and soft feel of your hair is worth it!
